Planned Giving, Bequests & Memorials

The biggest thing you can do for animals in the future is consider planned giving. A planned gift can provide financial benefits to you, including tax deductions enhanced income and, in some cases, tax-free income or tax liability protection. A planned gift also helps to ensure that the Stevens-Swan Humane Society will be able to continue our life saving efforts for years to come.

Remembering the Stevens-Swan Humane Society in your will, life insurance policies, or charitable trusts is the easiest way to help provide a chance at life for animals in the future. You can name Stevens-Swan Humane Society as a direct beneficiary of specific assets, a portion of your estate or as a contingent beneficiary to receive those assets originally designated for loved ones in the event that they do not survive you.

A charitable gift annuity is a planned-giving vehicle that supports Stevens-Swan Humane Society while providing income for you or a loved one. Annuities are based on a simple contract between the donor and Stevens-Swan Humane Society. The donor establishes the annuity with an irrevocable contribution of cash or long-held securities and Stevens-Swan Humane Society agrees to make yearly income payments based on the age of the annuitant. The donor is entitled to a federal tax deduction at the time the annuity is established, and the annual payments are also tax-advantaged.

Stevens-Swan Humane Society can assist you in establishing a variety of trusts. Whether you are interested in Charitable Lead or Remainder trusts, we can help you find what works best for you.

If you are interested in discussing any of these planned giving opportunities,
please call SSHS at 315-738-4357.

Here are a few ways you can help animals:

* Donate food, old blankets, towels, or other needed supplies. Contribute to one of our programs.

* Volunteer your time. Bathe and groom the animals, walk dogs, or play with cats. Stuff envelopes for a mailing. Help publicize an event.

* Choose your next pet from our shelter, which has many wonderful dogs and cats, in different shapes and sizes, just waiting for a permanent, loving home.

* Tell your friends about our shelter's services. Promote animal safety and responsible pet ownership. Celebrate National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week during the first full week of November.

* Be a responsible pet owner. Keep current identification on your dog or cat at all times. Spay or neuter your pet. Always keep your dog or cat properly confined or supervised. In addition to the basics—food, water, shelter, and veterinary care—give your pet lots of love and attention.

* Support legislation to protect animals. Contact government officials and urge them to support pro-animal legislation.

* Report animal cruelty and neglect as well as injured or stray animals. You may prevent suffering and even save a life.

* Instruct your children in how to care for animals properly and how to treat them with kindness. Set an example by doing the same.
