Fourth of July Festivities:

Look for us in the Utica Fourth of July Parade at 6pm this Saturday. Tha parade route is from MVCC to Proctor Park, afterwards enjoy the music of Classified at Proctor Park and Fireworks at dusk.

Should You Bring Your Pet?
As the country dons its red, white and blue to celebrate Independence Day, nothing says patriotism like a good old-fashioned barbecue with a side of fireworks. But beware pet parents, what's fun for people can be a downright drag for our furry friends.

The ASPCA recommends keeping your pooch indoors as much as possible during backyard parties and Fourth of July festivities, even if he is a pro picnicker. From toxic food and beverages to raucous guests and fireworks, the holiday weekend is a minefield of potential pet problems.

“Even the most timid dog can leap a six-foot fence if he's spooked by loud noises,” says Dr. Pamela Reid, Vice President of the ASPCA Animal Behavior Center. If your dog shows signs of distress from fireworks or boisterous revelers, Dr. Reid suggests giving him a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter. “The consistent licking should calm his nerves,” she says.

The ASPCA offers some more expert advice to keep your pet singing, “Oh Say Can You See,” all the way to the fifth and beyond:

  • Keep your pet on the wagon. Since alcohol is potentially poisonous to pets, place all wine, beer and spirits well out of paws' way.
  • Avoid scraps from the grill. Stick with your pet's normal diet—any change, even for a day, can result in stomach upset. Certain foods like onions, avocado, chocolate, grapes and raisins are especially toxic to pets .
  • Avoid lathering your pet with any insect repellent or sunscreen not intended for the four-legged kind. Ingestion can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy.
  • Stay fire-smart. Keep your pet away from fireworks, matches, citronella candles and lighter fluid, which if eaten can irritate the stomach, lungs and central nervous system.
  • Be cool near the pool. Don't leave pets unsupervised around a pool or lake—not all dogs are expert swimmers! Also, pools aren't large water bowls—they contain chlorine and other toxic chemicals that can cause stomach problems.

It's heartbreaking, the condition of some of the animals that we take in here at the Stevens-Swan shelter. For example, this sweet female puppy was brought in by Utica Animal Control Officer Chris Collver after a concerned citizen on Blandina Street in Utica spotted her and took her in. Upon her arrival, we saw the extremely malnousished and dehydrated shape she was in and we gave her our total attention and care. A foster volunteer also stepped in to take her for the evening. This little pup has now spent the week at a local veterinarian's clinic receiving medical treatment and is being kept there for observation. We're hopeful that this little girl will soon be on a path to much better health. We are so appreciative of our 'eyes and ears' in the community who help us in the fight against animal abuse. If you see any forms of abuse, please contact your animal control officer and help those animals who can't speak out for themselves. Your calls will be kept confidential and annonymous if you wish.

We are following up with information as to this poor puppy's previous owners and mistreatment.

**Update: (Below) Here's Angel now known at SOPHIA after 2 weeks at the Veterinary Hospital and she going home with her foster family. She has made some progress but has a ways to go. If you'd like to help us in paying for her medical bills (now over $1,000) please send your donation to: The SOPHIA Fund (Checks made out to SSHS) c/o The Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street, Utica, NY 13502

Meet a great friend to our cats! Summer Naughton is 13 years old and a student at Whitesboro Middle School. She loves her pets and decided to do something special for our cats. She looked at our on-line list of cats up for adoption, made a lisiting of them all and then took her allowance money to buy fabric and materials to make 109 cat pillow beds! It took her 3 days to complete her project with a little help from her mom Ellen. We think this was such an outstanding effort from Summer, we contacted WKTV and they came and did a story about this very special young lady. After dropping off her donations, we took Summer on a tour of the shelter so she could meet all of her cat friends who will now be more comfy thanks to Summer!

Congressman Mike Arcuri recently stopped by to say hello to our staff and to take a tour. He also told us about his own dog that he adopted from us a few years ago.

Thank You !!!

Over $91,000 raised for our animals

(Dec) Here's a recent picture of 'Mickey', who is improving daily. He's now 15 weeks old and growing up to be an energetic playful dog. Eileen Bowes has done a wonderful job of foster caring for 'Mickey' and has now officially adopted him!

Happy Holidays to Mickey and Eileen and to everyone who has followed this story and who has provided support and prayers for Mickey's return to good health.

Here's an update about 'Mickey' the injured puppy that we are now fostering. Thank You to everyone who has helped us with monetary donations for his medical bills. After additional visits to the vet, it turns out Mickey's injuries continue to surface. Additional symptoms and treatments are being determined. The 'Mickey Fund' is collecting donations for his care and that of our other animals in need. If you'd like to donate, please send your checks to The Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street, Utica, NY 13502. Attach a note for 'Mickey's Fund'.

Mickey suffered a broken leg and severe head trauma after being injured during a domestic dispute, when he was thrown against a wall. The Utica Police Department and Animal Control were involved in this case with the alleged abuser being arrested and now awaiting a city court appearance.
