It is with much sadness that we report the passing of our friend Steve Lazarek of Utica. Steve was a drummer with the local band 'Keel the Puppet', an accomplished auto body professional, a music afficionado and he was a very good friend to animals and our shelter by helping us at the Animal Jam and Wiggle Waggle Walkathon fundraisers. Here he is with his dog Lulu at last year's WWW. Our condolences to his wife Sue, his family and his numerous friends throughout the area.

Not only are Girl Scout cookies tasty, sometimes they help add up to donations for our animals. Here are the members of Girl Scout Troop #95 from Oriskany along with advisor Michele Anderson, handing over $100 to Jerry. They raised this money from sales of their cookies. Here they are posing with 'Danny' the cat, after taking a tour of the shelter. Thank you ladies, we appreciate it very much!

Happy 4th of July ! Here we are, getting ready to walk in the Utica Independence Day Parade up Genesee Street. We brought a few of our dogs for the walk too! It was a beautiful day and it was great to see so many people on the parade route and many families had their dogs with them, in the shade, keeping cool.

At 14 years old, she is already making a difference in the lives of pets here and around the country. Thank you Katie !

What a guy! Here's Lucas Williams of Utica. He just finished 2nd grade at Jones School in South Utica. Lucas enjoys playing baseball and he loves animals. He decided to ask his family, relatives and friends to help him put on a bake sale for the last two days of school. He sold a lot of cookies, cupcakes and sweet treats to make a donation of $160 to help our animals. Thanks to everyone who helped Lucas at his bake sale. We made him a M.V.P. (Most Valuable Pet-helper!)

THANK YOU for your food donations and $68 collected

Bottle collectors had a special event on Sunday May 2nd at the Mohawk Valley Antique Bottle Club's annual ‘Show and Sale '. A pet food collection for our animals took place at the show at the Utica Curling Club, 8300 Clark Mills Rd in Whitesboro. Did you know one of the founding fathers of the shelter Mr. William Blaikie also ran a Utica Pharmacy and many collectors have his embossed bottles in their collections? Thank you to the organizers of this bottle show for helping us out. We appreciate it!

A moment of silence please....for 'Gizmo' our house cat mascot here at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. After 20+ years as our shelter ambassador, Gizmo recently passed away. Many who have come through the shelter as visitors and employees remember her with her fluffy black and white coat and her friendly personality. The office is a little empty without her around these days.

ACS is A-OK with us! What a great group of employees at ACS in Utica, collecting over $1,100 for our animals. They had a 'dress-down' day at work and dropped by the shelter to make our day! Making the donation delivery are (l-r) Kim Hatzinger, her daughter Erica Baretta and Kiki Alexander.

Another case of animal cruelty in Utica resulted in an arrest Wed. March 10. Rebecca L. Spratt, 24 years old, of 319 Rutger Street in Utica was charged by the Utica Police Department with misdemeanor animal cruelty after she allegedly stabbed a 6 month old pit bull puppy in the head. This incident was involved with a domestic dispute. The dog suffered the head wound and the loss of a significant amount of blood and was taken to Burrstone Animal Hospital for treatment. The injuries were not considered life threatening. Rebecca Spratt was also charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief involved with the domestic dispute. She was arraigned in Utica City Court by Judge Ralph Eannace and bail was set at $3,000. She was back in court on Tuesday March 16th at 1pm in front of Judge Jerry Popeo. The case was adjourned until Tuesday March 30th for pre-trial at which time the defendant's appointed attorney filed motions to be reviewed by the court (Judge Popeo) and a decision will be renedered on May 26th. We are awaiting further information.

We will be following this case closely and we'll update soon with more information.

Here's a photo of 'Zeus' the abused dog from the March 15th case.

On Saturday March 20th , a ‘Cutting for Critters' fundraising event was held at Blonde Ambition, 32 Burrstone Road in New York Mills from 8a-4p. 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the Stevens-Swan Humane Society of Oneida County. The anniversary month is May, but the shelter will be organizing many events throughout the year to celebrate the 100 years of service to the community. The Stevens-Swan Humane Society takes its name from James N. Stevens and Gustavus Swan. In the late 1800's, these two community-minded men along with William Blaikie helped to organize three different organizations dealing with the care of children and animals. In 1910, all three were combined to form the Stevens-Swan Humane Society with branches in Utica and Rome. Upcoming events include the 100th Anniversary Gala on May 15th.

On the road with Rufus: Kara and John Steigerwald of Inlet came to the shelter to adopt Rufus, our Shepherd/Hound mix. Off they went on their own Adirondack adventure!

'Sid' (a 2-year old Dalmation/Hound/Pit mix) and Ron Palmiter of Mohawk say their goodbyes before heading home. So long guys, Have Fun!

The Utica Saint Patrick's Day Parade March 13th

Staff members and friends load up the free beads for spectators on the parade route.

Lookin good! Getting the float decorated and making sure our poeple have their hats and beads.

Another SSHS Success Story! After losing a loved family pet, Anita LaPolla of Utica and her son Anthony came to the shelter and found 'Corby' a happy little Bichon Frise that needed a new home. It was a perfect fit and now Corby has become a big part of the Lapolla family.

Allie Fee of New Hartford (and her friend Madeline Macintosh) went out and collected donations for our animals. She has also adopted cats from our shelter. Here's Allie and Rambo in our 'Dog Pound' meeting area. Thanks Allie!

On the road again: We went to Boonville Elementary School to say hello to Miss Marks' 3rd Grade Class and to talk about the Stevens-Swan Humane Society of Oneida County. Jerry also had a chance to introduce the students to 'Zoey' an Australian Shepherd. Trey Carbone also got a 'thank you' award for helping out with the recent Telethon fundraising for the shelter animals.

Update:

Sentencing in Utica City Court on February 11, 2010. The persons charged in the 'Annie' dog abuse and cruelty case had their sentences announced by Judge Balzano: Both pled guilty.

Gregory Patterson : 3 years probation

Lashanta L. Jackson : 60 hours of community service (conditional discharge)

The following letter was written by Jerry Kraus of the Stevens-Swan Humane Society on February 5th, in advance of the sentencing and was sent to area media outlets.

Animal cruelty cases need swift justice

Our area has seen an increase in animal cruelty cases recently. From a cat dying in Utica from shots fired from a gas powered BB gun to a puppy abused in Little Falls with a power drill, these are just the latest two incidents of shocking behaviors against defenseless animals. At the Stevens-Swan Humane Society of Oneida County, we've also seen recent cases of a cat having it's tail cut off with a box cutter and the near death abuse and neglect of ‘Annie' the young dog who has captured the entire community with her successful fight back to much better health.

It is up to our criminal justice system to now prosecute these unlawful behaviors of cowards. Studies show that the majority of animal abusers move on to child abuse and human assaults.  We need to send a clear message that Central New York does not allow this criminal behavior against animals to go unpunished.

If you happen to witness or can confirm animal abuse in your neighborhood, please contact your local animal control officer or your local humane society. All calls can remain anonymous and confidential. Please speak up for those who can't.

Here's 'Annie' at the shelter before her recent visit to WKTV for the Monday Feb. 22 noon Newstalk segment with Jerry. She is doing much better! (scroll down to see her 'before' pictures)

The Pause for Paws Fundraiser was a great success!

$2,500 was raised! This event was organized by a few community minded-volunteers who wanted to help our shelter animals. Thanks to everyone who came out to Harts Hill Inn (Whitesboro) for the party featuring hors d'oeuvres and desserts, wine tasting and party music from DJ Mike, raffle baskets and door prizes. $2,500 was made from the event to benefit the animals here at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society.

Event organizers Debbie Pohoresky and Donna LaManque helped make this a very successful first-time fundraising event for our animals. Thanks to everyone who helped out. Plans are already in the works for next year's party!

Victoria from Utica collected lots of pet food and supplies for our animals at her recent 6th birthday party. She is a M.V.P. for sure! Here she is in our 'Dog Pound' area with big bropther Noah and their new friend Stella, a 7 year old Beagle mix up for adoption. Victoria's family did adopt a Beagle named Mario from the shelter. Now we need to find little Stella a new home.

They were nice enough to bring us all of the donations and they took a tour to see all the dogs and cats up for adoption.

Tune in every Monday at Noon for the news on WKTV Newschannel 2 to see Newstalk. Jerry Kraus brings along a shelter pet up for adoption. We have a great success rate after showing off their smiling faces on TV. Here's Don Shipman, Jerry and 'Zoey' during a recent newscast.

Teacher Sue Gustafson's kindergarten class of Westmoreland Rd. Elementary School in Whitesboro recently collected Holiday donations and supplies for the animals at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. They also invited Jerry Kraus and 'Mia' to visit and talk about the shelter and pet safety. Thank you also to the other kindergarten students who helped and their teachers.

So long Sisters! Little 'Mya' and 'Mia', the 8-month old Pit mix puppies are heading to a foster home for the Holidays! Jillian Deblasiis and her mom Jessica along with her dad Rocco Fiaschetti from Rome are looking forward to twice the fun this year with both sweet little sisters, who came into the shelter as strays. (Mia was a great little representative of the shelter, accompanying Jerry to many schools this year, picking up donations)

'Lucas' says his goodbyes before heading out with his new family, The Graf's from Marcy. Here's Alex and Miranda with their parents Bruce and Alison getting Lucas ready for his trip home.

It's time for the annual United Way campaign and did you know that you can designate your donation gift (or a percentage of it) to help us here at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society of Oneida County? You sure can and many have made us their designated charity. Please remember us when you are filling out your donation card. Thank You.

Here's Annie a 1 to 2 year old female pit mix, rescued (11/18) in the City of Utica. After an anonymous call to the UPD, Animal Control Officer Chris Collver responded and after seeing the neglected condition of the dog, seized her and brought her into the Stevens-Swan Humane Society for Vet treatment, care, housing and evaluation. Besides severe malnutrition and anemia, Annie has an eye infection, flea infestation and other medical ailments. The investigation of this abuse and neglect is ongoing and 2 Utica suspects have been charged with misdemeanor animal abuse and will appear in Utica City Court at 9am on Thursday Feb. 11th for sentencing.

Anyone interested in helping with the cost of helping little Annie, please send your donation to ‘Annie's Fund' c/o The Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street , Utica , NY 13502 . Thank you to everyone who has made a donation to Annie's fund so far. We've collected over $500 $1,500 $1,900 $2,200 $2,500 $2,900 $3,256 from concerned local citizens for her medical treatments that continue to bring her back to good health. One day at a time.

Here's Annie after 5 days with us and her new foster Dad (Jim from Whitesboro). She's gained almost 5 pounds since she came in and she's getting healthier every day. Thanks to everyone who has helped her on her journey back to happiness and good health. Every journey starts with the first step and Annie is on her way!

Here's another update about 'Annie' (Nov 27): After 9 days, she has gained 9 pounds! Here she is modeling her new sweater, to keep her warm. She continues to see the Vet once a week for bloodwork and medical check-ups and treatments. She is getting better every day under the watchful eye of her 'foster' dad. THANK YOU for your donations & concern for our little 'Annie'.

Heeeeerr's Annie !(Dec. 4th) Look at how she is filling out. In just two weeks, she has gained 15 pounds! She still is getting Vet treatments and she is becoming a sweet, loveable happy pet. In just a few weeks, the transformation has been wonderful to witness. Left for almost dead, she has made significant gains under the watchful eye of her foster dad Jim, The Stevens-Swan Humane Society and her Vet team. Thanks to all of you who have lended your support as well! Keep checking back, for updates on our little Annie.

Here's Annie on Dec. 10th. Forget about the 'Biggest Loser', Annie's working on being the 'Biggest Gainer' - by adding 18 pounds in just three weeks! And it looks good on her, doesn't it? Thank you to Jim in Whitesboro (her foster Dad) and everyone involved in Annie's 'comeback'. She is the sweetest girl and appreciates every act of kindness.

Here's 'Annie' on January 14th, less than 2 months after she was brought in near death. She has been fostered into a fun loving, chubby little happy dog. She is very friendly and loves going for walks and rides with her new best friend, Jim from Whitesboro. Look for Annie and our other success stories on our upcoming WKTV Telethon on Thursday January 28th from Noon until 8pm. Please consider calling in a pledge to continue the heart-warming animal turnarounds like what we've seen with 'Annie'.

Look at these two! Jeffie on the left is one of our former shelter dogs, a 7 year old male Cocker Spaniel that Jerry took on WKTV for Newstalk. The Hillage family in Whitesboro was watching and already had Rudie, a 5 year old female Cocker Spaniel. They came right over and adopted Jeffie and they are now like brother and sister! We love our success stories.

Thank you to the Utica College Women's Lacrosse team for volunteering at the shelter. Here's a few team members out for a walk with 'Zoey' (l-r): Shelby Barbay, Maria Santucci and Stephanie Belanger.

Another success story! When a stray comes in to the shelter and we can help reunite a family with their lost dog, that is one of the highlights of our day. Sandy DiCamillo of Utica and her grandson Poppy were heartbroken when Mercedes, their 6 year old Rottweiller got loose and ran away one day. Well 'Sadie' (as Poppy calls her) was waiting here for her family to come get her. It will be a Merry Christmas for them all!

Just in time for the Holidays! David and Debbie Bolos made it a very special Christmas to remember for their son Timothy when they came in and found Max, the young Golden Retriever. The family and their new best friend are doing great!

Cookies and Cupcakes for sale! Here's 4 very energetic community minded Holland Patent Elementary Students who have formed a Pet Association club. They've been brainstorming ways to help our shelter animals and recently organized a Bake Sale at Sports Unlimited (our next door neighbors). They all have been M.V. P.'s in our opinion and we are looking forward to their upcoming events. (l-r: Kelsey Buck, Hannah Mickle, Riley Linckton and Katie Harrison)

Want some popcorn with those cookies? Here another picture of the bake sale M.V.P. helpers including (l-r) Kelsey Buck, Carlie Stalker, Hannah Mickle and Jackie Adamo.

Bye bye 'Buster'. This 7 year old spaniel mix became a friendly part of our front office team during his short stay here. Here's Buster posing with his new family: (l-r): Lisa Karpowich & Elaine and Frank Acker from Herkimer.

Autumn Fire is added to the line-up, replacing Sybil.

Jerry Kraus and 'Rex' the Puggle (Pug/Beagle mix) recently made a visit to Bradley Elementary School in New Hartford to talk about Pet Safety and the role of the Stevens-Swan Humane Society.

Here's Rex with his new family, the Winn's of New Hartford. One of the Winn students at Bradley School met Rex and told his family all about him and the rest is...another Stevens-Swan Humane Society success story! Good luck to the Winn family and Rex.

Thanks to Ashley Chiffy of New Hartford and her friends. Ashley recently hosted her 14th birthday party and she collected plenty of pet supplies and treats for our animals. Her friends celebrated Ashley's birthday with a sleepover and movies. Here's Ashley making friends with 'Momma Kitty' here at the shelter.

Katie Wynn of Marcy had a great idea: to celebrate her 9th birthday by asking for gifts for our shelter animals, instead of getting presents for herself. We know that makes Katie a M.V.P. (Most Valuable Pethelper)! Here's katie with Gizmo (our 18 year old cat mascot) and Buster, a 6 year old male Cocker Spaniel mix up for adoption. Thank You Katie.

They collected lots of food and supplies for our animals and over $150.00! They took a tour of the shelter and told us about their favorite animals and pets and how they like to take care of them all. Happy Birthday. Emma is now one of our M. V. P's ! (Most Valuable Pet-helpers)

Marissa Johnson of Ilion came to visit us. She and her family brought us pet food and supplies from her recent 10th birthday party. For her birthday, Marissa and her friends went to see 'Where the Wild Things Are' and then had a nice pizza party. The guests were told to bring items for our animals and they sure did! Here's Marissa and 'Sonia', one of our adoptable cats, checking out all of the donations. Marissa, you're one of our 'M.V.P.'s !

Thank you Cheyenne Shoemaker of Steuben! She is another M.V.P. (Most Valuable Pet-helper) that helped us by collecting presents for our animals at her 9th birthday party. She brought us treats, collars, pet food, sheets and much more! Here's Cheyenne with Calvin, one of our adoptable shelter cats.

Alexis Racioppa of Clinton is our new M.V.P. (Most Valuable Pet-helper). For her recent 10th birthday party, she collected supplies for our shelter animals, giving up her own gifts and toys. At her birthday party, she and her friends made treats and blankets for our dogs and cats. Her family has 3 dogs at home, including 2 of our former shelter dogs. What a great friend to our animals you are Alexis! Thank You.

Utica fire claims lives of 4 people and pets

In the tragic fire on James Street in Utica (September 20), we are mourning 4 people who passed away. Over 20 people lived in the 12 apartments there and some had pets. Here is the story of Gail Baker and her boyfriend Pilar Ayuso who lived in a third floor front apartment and had 5 cats and a snake. Two cats were saved by the Utica Fire Department and went to the Vet hospital with various injuries, three are still missing and the snake died in the fire. Of the two cats saved, one, 'Precious', has been released by the Vet and the other 'Tigger' was receiving medical treatments for smoke inhalation and burns and was just recently released. (Other animals passed away in the fire and some are still missing)

Pictured above is Precious, held by Gail. The Vet bills for Precious and Tigger have reached over $800. As of Friday Oct. 2nd we have received almost $600 in donations from the public. Here at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society, we are contributing $200 to the cause so we are almost ready to pay her bill.

If you can help, please send a donation made out to The Stevens-Swan Humane Society and note that it is for the Fire Fund and we'll make sure it gets applied to the Vet bill that continues to rise and others that may develop. Please mail it or drop it off at : The Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street, Utica, NY 13502. Thank you very much.

Below is a look at the front of the building.

Here they are leaving the shelter on their way to their new adventure together. A great SSHS Success Story.

Our friend Rick 'Animal' Morehouse of Utica passed away recently after battling cancer. Our condolences to his family and his many friends. He was the organizer of the 'Animal for Animals' charity fundraiser for the shelter last year and was helping to organize the 2nd annual event this Fall. He and his friends were planning on filling his bucket with monetary donations as they made their way throughout the bars and clubs of West Utica. He also was involved in our 'Animal Jam' rock club concerts last year to raise money for our Telethon last January.

In 'Animal's' memory, there will be an upcoming local music fest organized to benefit the animals at our shelter. His friends are looking at a date in December. We'll let you know when the info becomes available.

Here's another of our recent M.V.P.'s. (Most Valuable Pet-helpers): Jake Meola of Utica.

Jake's birthday is August 5. After he saw a Stevens- Swan television Public Service announcement, he asked his mother to include in his birthday invitations a request for animal food, instead of asking for gifts for himself. Most all of the donations came from children that attend Our Lady of Lourdes in Utica. Jake also loves feeding the animals at the Utica Zoo. Thanks Jake, you are an outstanding young man and a friend to animals.

The workers at First Source Federal Credit Union (New Hartford, South Utica, North Utica and Herkimer) recently got together to help out the animals at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. 15 employees signed up for the Wiggle Waggle Walkathon and walked their dogs and our shelter dogs. They brought in almost $500 in pledges PLUS a corporate donation of $200 AND they collected food and supplies for our shelter. In total, they presented us with $1,000 in cash and food donations! What a great group of community minded people. A big Thank you to First Source Federal Credit Union.

Pictured at their New Hartford office are: (l-r) Lynn Riley (Senior Brance Manager), Pam Way (Marketing Specialist), Kristy Nole (Assistant Vice President Marketing & Communications) and Jerry Kraus (Stevens-Swan Humane Society)

Thank You to everyone who made Kuronda Bed donations to our shelter. We have a few Kuranda dog beds which provide our dogs with a warm, soft and dry place off the floor to sleep, but we don't have enough for everyone. The bed company is still offering special discounts for these beds thru a Donation Program which would send the beds directly to our shelter in the donor's name.

*Please specify the aluminum beds for our shelter, they are more durable

The beds are sturdy and long lasting so you will be providing a lasting gift for a dog today and another tomorrow. Please call Kuranda at 800-494-7122 or go to their website www.kuranda.com to donate a bed to our shelter dogs in your name, or as a gift in the name of a friend or family member. Kuranda will mail a personalized Gift Card acknowledgement directly to them from you.

Please remember the dogs in the shelter during the cold months ahead and all year long!

It's the worst part of our job here: Dealing with the abuse of the animals that takes place in our community. Here is Sandy, a 4 year old hound mix who just came to us after a stay at a local vet hospital. She is an abuse victim, being recently beaten and stabbed (you can see her stitches in the photo above). Utica Police and our Animal Control officer have made an arrest in this case and there is a Felony charge pending. To see such a sweet dog suffer such serious abuse brings us all back to the harsh realities of the work we need to do here, not just in mending these poor animals but in educating the public as to the abuse that is happening around us and how we all can have a part in reporting it and helping to keep watch over our area's pets and animals. Along with that, we remain steadfast in bringing these criminals to justice for their crimes against helpless animals. We'll be closely following this case in Utica City Court.

If you'd like to help with a donation to cover part of Sandy's ongoing medical bills, please send a check to us c/o The Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street, Utica, NY 13502. Please note that it's for the 'Sandy' fund and we'll make sure she gets a special gentle hug for your kindness.

Here's Nadia and Pauline selling our Car Raffle Tickets at the American Legion Baseball Tournament at Donovan Stadium - Murnane Field in Utica. Thanks to Don Oliver and the organizers for letting us sell our tickets at the games and thanks to everyone who came over and bought tickets!.

Here's Dominic, Kara and Jackie setting up outside The Electric Company on Varick Street for a "Saranac Thursday" Car Raffle Ticket sales event. Thanks to Theresa and Kathy who also helped out during a very busy night. Thanks to Zee and Laura of the Electric Co. for hosting our fundraiser.

Thank you to all of our golfers and everyone who helped out in this year's Golf Outing. Over 120 golfers came out on a red-hot day. We did raise over $5,000 to help our animals! We had a tie in this year's tournament held Sunday August 16th at Hidden Valley in Whitesboro (with a 14 under : 57) . After a tie-breaker, the above team took 1st place: (l-r) Bruce Sylvester, Jeff Hoffmeister, Greg Brown and Shawn Brown. Our runners-up (below l-r) are Jeff Flansburg, Julie Ambrose, Matt Ambrose and Bud Ambrose. Special thanks to our presenting gold sponsor: StaffWorks and to our silver sponsor: NBT Bank.

Special thanks also to Ali & Anna, Steph, Tiffany and Jamie, Joe D., Dave Hunter, Stacey and David Maier, Charlie Lange and Bob Jones, Smitty at Tri-Valley Beverage and Kevin McGrellis and his crew at Hidden Valley.

The Fountainhead Group (New York Mills) recently held their company picnic and Jerry showed up with 'Sammy' to deliver a Thank You plaque for all of their employee donations from recent fundraising events for our animals here at the shelter including the Ice Cream Social, car raffle ticket sales and raffle baskets. They also are putting together a wonderful employee membership/payroll deduction plan as well. Thank you to Jackie and John Romano, Theresa Wilson and everyone at The Fountainhead Group.

THANKS to the employees at Bank of New York Mellon (Oriskany) for their efforts to help us out here at The Stevens-Swan Humane Society. Through the Community Partnership program, Lisa Ellis organized a ' dress down' day to raise money for our animals plus she put together a donation drive for food and supplies. She was pleasantly surprised to find out that not only does the bank match the money collected, it also matches donations collected. They kept track of each item donated in a spreadsheet which was turned into Corporate headquarters, who will then put a dollar value, add to the total and send a check to the shelter!

How did they do? OUTSTANDING !

Dress down fundraiser brought in $885.00

Individual/Memberships/Raffle $120.00

Total collected $1,005.00

They did 6 drop-offs to our Stevens-Swan shelter with donated items for a total of 297 items including a digital camera, a freezer, and six – 38 pound tubs of Tidy Cat kitty litter.

On Friday July 17 , employees came over to our Stevens-Swan Humane Society to present the money and the donations collected the week of dress down. We were so grateful for their generosity. Corporate campaigns like this make an amazing difference in the lives of our animals.

(See some of their wonderful employees in the photos below)

Thank You So Much to Lisa Ellis and the team: Ann Razzano-Stedman, David Kukowski, Jeanne Clark, Roxanne Flint, Sandra LaSalle and Tracy Bach

It's heartbreaking, the condition of some of the animals that we take in here at the Stevens-Swan shelter. For example, this sweet female puppy was brought in by Utica Animal Control Officer Chris Collver after a concerned citizen on Blandina Street in Utica spotted her and took her in. Upon her arrival, we saw the extremely malnousished and dehydrated shape she was in and we gave her our total attention and care. A foster volunteer also stepped in to take her for the evening. This little pup has now spent the week at a local veterinarian's clinic receiving medical treatment and is being kept there for observation. We're hopeful that this little girl will soon be on a path to much better health. We are so appreciative of our 'eyes and ears' in the community who help us in the fight against animal abuse. If you see any forms of abuse, please contact your animal control officer and help those animals who can't speak out for themselves. Your calls will be kept confidential and annonymous if you wish.

We are following up with information as to this poor puppy's previous owners and mistreatment.

**Update: (Below) Here's Angel now known at SOPHIA after 2 weeks at the Veterinary Hospital and she going home with her foster family. She has made some progress but has a ways to go. If you'd like to help us in paying for her medical bills (now over $1,000) please send your donation to: The SOPHIA Fund (Checks made out to SSHS) c/o The Stevens-Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio Street, Utica, NY 13502

Thank You !

Here's more recent updates of 'Sophia' : with foster Mom Linda and taking a few steps on her own

Another one of our puppies is going to a 'foster' home. Here's 'Sissy' with Angela and Bob, and now they will take care of her until she is old enough and ready to be adopted. Our foster programs have many benefits for you, us and the animals. If you are interested, please call our office at 738-4357.

We love it when best friends meet here at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. For example, Alex Acquaviva of Utica and his buddy 'Punchy' met here and within minutes, they hit it off! We know it's going to be a super-fun summer for the two of them!

The Stevens-Swan Humane Society (SSHS) of Oneida County is a private nonprofit organization that provides a safe haven to all domestic pets that must be surrendered, are stray, abandoned, homeless, abused, or injured.

The Stevens-Swan Humane Society serves as a safe haven for nearly 3,000 animals each year that need to be sheltered, regardless of circumstance. Taking care of these animals 365 days a year is a tremendous responsibility.

At SSHS our mission is to protect the health and safety of both the animals and local communities of Oneida County, New York.

Our staff is here to make sure that the animals are as comfortable as possible, and that they receive the medical attention they need. We also serve as a source for information for all kinds of animal related problems, questions and help. We are here to help you with a most important decision -- adopting a shelter pet.
